mesh removal stories

Message from Lorraine
There are stories published everywhere! The more people who submit their stories the more the public will understand how serious this growing health concern really is with TVTs and Meshes.

Please find below stories and other useful links on TVT's and on mesh tape removal surgeries from around the Globe.

Lorraine Evans-25-March-2012-tvt-story.pdf >>> I can highly recommend my surgeon Professor Marcus Drake MA DM FRCS, he does thorough examinations including if necessary cystoscopy, CT Scan, MRI, Blood tests, gives regular appointments, explains everything about your surgical procedure if required and he will send you copy letters to you on all consultations. He removed part of my mesh from the midline urethra. I can safely say I no longer have that horrible abrasive feeling inside, no more discharge, no more pain in that area at this present time. He is a wonderful man and really sympathetic on mesh related complications.

Since I wrote the above above back in September 2010 as of today 2 May 2011 - After approx 3 months after partial removal I am getting symptoms again, I had an appointment with my surgeon and he could not could see any erosion, however, I really believe due to the mesh closed behind the original wound it is causing irritation and still trying to get out of my body. I still have some of the mesh tape left inside plus I still get abscesses, urgency, itching, swelling, sometimes shooting pains, clear and yellowy discharge plus my front and back end is very sore. I have to wear daily pads which I feel sure is contributing to the itching all the time. I am not completely out of the woods as yet. I just cope the best I can each day at this present time.

I am going to upload my full updated story shortly, thank you for your patience. In the meantime you can read my story on my google blog which I did back in October 2007, http://truthinmedicine-lor.blogspot.com/ >>>

Update: 11th February 2012 - I have had a consultation for a full mesh removal and will update on my progress in the near future.

Since then has followed partial mesh removal, septicemia due to the infection, removal of middle section of the TVTO pierced urethra catheter for 2 and half weeks , virilant pseudemonas infection. The remaining meshes are lost in my body I know somewhere in the pelvis no one wants to remove them or can remove them due to the risks it would pose and I suffer on a daily basis. I am so severely scarred vaginally that my vagina is now distorted and at least 2 inches too short, this make having sex nigh impossible and excruciating.

Lana Keeton
flower peace Lorraine first met Lana back in 2008 and it is Lana who started it all! Lana brought awareness on complications associated with the TVT's and Meshes to the World and has tirelessly campaigned with the FDA and other Governing Bodies to show them this is a serious growing health concern.

Lana Keeton is the Founder of Truth in Medicine Incorporated she is a patient advocacy organization which educates the public about the potential risks and complications from the implantation of synthetic surgical mesh into the human body. The organization also educates and supports patients who have already been harmed by surgical implantation of synthetic mesh. flower peace My story begins in August 2010, I had a cystocele repair ( grade 1 - mild) and Gynecare TVT put in for mild incontinence, like many of the ladies on here I believed my consultant that it was a routine op and would be fine. I did not do any homework/research and had no idea how bad complications could be, I read the bit about erosion in the leaflet the hospital gave me and thought it won't happen to me. flower peace I am a 37 year old. A week ago, after a year of constant vaginal and leg pain all on my left side I had the TVTO removed. It has been a year of constant pain, depression and overall totally exhausting to get the medical professions to believe me when I said the minute I woke up from having the TVTo fitted I had constant pain. After visiting various consultants of which most I had to pay privately .I found a consultant who did one internal and said he could feel the tape and that it was twisted and that it needed to be removed.

A week after the op my pain has gone I can come off the heroin based medication within the next week and I feel I have a future. All my urinary problems have come back but I have been assured that with perserverance my consultant will try to sort them, anything is hopefull!

I just wanted to say how enlightening I found your website and I only wished I had looked for you straight after the op a year ago. I am currently putting a complaint together against the surgeon who fitted the tape as I went back to see her frequently and was told to relax and try sex!! I believe she put the tape in incorrectly as I have since heard of another of her patients who had the same op after me and has exactly the same problems I have experienced for the last year.

Once again your website is very encouraging and supportive and helped me realise I wasn't going mad over the last year! I still don't know if i have long term nerve damage ..I will just have to see.

flower peace May 2011 - I had trauma surgery for a mesh removal in 2007 which required heavy dissection of the peritoneum and I have nerve and tissue damage, and a huge swelling right across the abdomen that has never gone down since the op I have been left with unrelenting chronic pain, my life is a nightmare!. .Has anybody else had complications after a mesh removal?, after the operation the pain was so bad I really thought I was gonna die, they told me in the recovery room they had a real job getting the mesh out, I had drains in for 6 days because I was bleeding so much after the operation, I also got a wound infection. The mesh removal has had devastating affects on my life. The original mesh was brilliant and I had no problems! until I had an accident at work and which then resulted in me having to have the mesh removed. Is there anybody that has this kind of damage after a mesh removal?

May 2011 - Thank-you on behalf of the many women who have had problems with the TVT-O mesh implants. For me, I have had my third operation - one to originally place the Ethicon TVT-O mesh tape, the 2nd and 3rd to remove it, and I am now much, much better. No more pain, no more muscle spasms, no more sitting on knives or prickle bushes etc. For any woman who had this procedure and is in pain, I would recommend she finds a good Urogynecologist who will remove ALL the mesh tape. By only excising part of it, my pain lessened but then returned, changed but still there and the muscle spasms in my legs continued. Only when the entire mesh was removed, was I pain free. And - still continent! Apparently, the scar tissue helps to maintain continence - so far, so good. Time will tell the whole story. Take care Lorraine, and I truly hope that this mesh procedure is reconsidered before other woman are exposed to it.

Bladder Sling Surgery Complications

Read More Stories showing on Jane Akres' Website
I hope you find this a helpful resource. I’m National News Editor, Jane Akre and I began MDND with the hope of providing the latest news, information and perspective from the regulatory, industry and patient point of view, something that goes underreported in much of the coverage of permanently implanted surgical mesh. The public is just now becoming aware that many devices do not undergo the same scrutiny as prescription drugs and are instead grandfathered in under an FDA loophole that has gone largely unchanged since the 1970s.
